Recently, OpenAI made a bold proposal to the Biden administration: to build mega data centers with a total capacity of 5GW in every state in the US. Behind this proposal is OpenAI's urgent need to develop more advanced AI models and compete with China.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, each data center consumes as much power as the total power consumption of a city, demonstrating its enormous energy needs. However, OpenAI believes that this unprecedented expansion is necessary to ensure America's leadership in AI. At a White House meeting, Sam Altman was joined by other tech leaders and spoke in depth with government officials. After the meeting, OpenAI shared an analysis report written by the company with outside experts. The report detailed the economic and national security benefits that building a 5GW data center would bring to the United States.
Notably, 5GW is roughly equivalent to the power generated by five nuclear reactors, or enough to power nearly 3 million homes. This further underscores the sheer scale and far-reaching impact of the OpenAI program.
Moving forward, OpenAI will continue to work with government officials and industry colleagues to explore effective ways to realize this ambitious program, in order to drive continued innovation and leading-edge development of AI technology in the United States.
